SFEP managing funding for work to improve water delivery in Marin City
The San Francisco Estuary Partnership is managing grant funding from the State Department of Water Resources (DWR) for a project to replace aging water pipelines along streets in Marin City, a historically underserved community.
The project will replace Marin Water’s aging underground water infrastructure along various streets in Marin City. The improvements will help reduce water loss to leaks and strengthen the overall resilience of the community’s drinking water system. The existing pipeline is leak-prone and the community has experienced several large leaks resulting in disruption in water service at various times over the years.
The modernized replacement pipe is also better designed to withstand and more quickly recover from natural disasters such as earthquakes or wildfires, improving the overall resilience of the community’s water system.
More than 3.6 miles of existing cast iron, galvanized steel, and cement water mains are being replaced with welded steel pipe with a life expectancy of well over 100 years. New service laterals from the water mains to the service meters will also be replaced as part of the project.
The work is occurring in two phases. Representatives of Estuary Partnership were joined by the construction team from Marin Water and the grant manager from DWR last week for a tour as work heads toward completion this fall.
This project is funded by the Department of Water Resources through the Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) Grant Program. The Estuary Partnership has managed grant funding for over 70 IRWM projects throughout the region totaling more than $130 million.
