What We Do
The San Francisco Estuary Project completed a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) for the Bay in 1993 which is now a blueprint for the protection and restoration of water quality and living natural resources in the Bay and its watershed.
Like the other National Estuary Programs, the San Francisco Estuary Project is a place for region-wide issues to be aired, a source of support for policy development and project work on a watershed/ecosystem basis, and a provider of current and background information on the San Francisco Bay Delta system and its watersheds.
We work to attract and direct federal and other resources to local and regional needs; support needed scientific and watershed information gathering; informing the public and policy makers on estuarine issues; convene collaborative workgroups around key estuary issues; support local organizations to conduct research and to implementation actions, promote an ecosystem perspective with decision-makers and the public by bringing together funding, partners and projects to implement the defined goals and objectives of the estuary management plan.
Every other year the Estuary Project convenes a "State of the Estuary" conference at which scientists and policy makers present the latest information on the estuary's condition. The conference attracts over 800 stakeholders concerned with receiving the latest condition report
Over the 18 year history of the Project, Project partners have made great strides in implementing many actions identified in the CCMP and in fostering an environment out of which an array of new programs and partnerships have flourished and taken flight. Today, the San Francisco Estuary Project provides funding and technical assistance to agencies, municipalities and organizations to implement the recommended actions contained in the Management Plan. Each year the program staff, in partnership with the Implementation Committee, develops a mission driven workplan directing activities for that year.
