Audits Show Pollution Control Pays
In a blow for jobs versus environment naysayers, recents audits of three Silicon Valley industries suggest that if they take steps to reduce metal runoff, they'll save money. The audits, conducted as pilots for a 50-company audit program launched by the City of San Jose and spawned by a CLEAN South Bay Coalition lawsuit, showed that metal recovery, rinsewater recycling and other improvements could reduce copper and nickel discharges by 60-99 percent, and pay for themselves in savings on water and raw materials within three years (see chart).
