These steelhead, carried above the BART weir by volunteers, spawned in Stonybrook Creek in early 2008.
Using plants in natural restoration techniques called "soil bioengineering," the Alameda County Flood Control and Water Conservation District (ACFCWCD) will stabilize the banks of Stonybrook Creek, an upper watershed tributary to Alameda Creek, in three locations. These efforts will decrease turbidity and fine sediment, which are detrimental to sensitive species, including the federally-listed endangered steelhead trout. Because of its location in the upper watershed, this creek still has few urban influences and is spring-fed with cool flows, making it one of the most important salmonid tributaries in our region. This project will improve water quality in Alameda Creek, the largest tributary to San Francisco Bay, for the last thirteen miles before it reaches the Bay, as well as provide improved aquatic and riparian habitat. Reducing sediment loads and turbidity in the creek will contribute to the significant multi-agency effort underway to re-establish a thriving population of the native steelhead in the watershed.
