Friends of the Estuary
Friends of the San Francisco Estuary (Friends) was established by SFEP’s Management Committee in May 1991 and incorporated as a California non-profit organization in 1992. Friends was established to build broad-based public support for Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) implementation. The CCMP assigns the following specific responsibilities to Friends:
- Develop public involvement, education, communication, and advocacy programs.
- Promote citizen involvement in studying, restoring and managing a healthy Estuary.
- Develop and implement public education and involvement action plans.
- Develop a flexible, community-based framework for public involvement and education in all aspects of Estuary management.
- Serve as a watchdog and advocate for CCMP implementation.
Friends assists SFEP by promoting public review and involvement in overall CCMP implementation and decision-making, encouraging dialogue between public and private interests on restoration of the Estuary, and seeking to sustain public and political interest in CCMP implementation.
